McLaren Applied Technologies and GSK to appear at South by South West in Austin
McLaren Applied Technologies (MAT) will be joined by its strategic partner, GSK, at the forthcoming South by South West festival in Austin - one of the largest interactive conferences in the world.
Geoff McGrath, vice president of McLaren Applied Technologies, and Julian Jenkins, vice president of project planning & management at GSK, will speak at a session this Friday (13th March '15) focused on biotelemetry and its place in medical research and clinical trials.
McLaren has a rich heritage in processing large amounts of live data; over the course of a typical grand prix weekend the racing team will capture more than a billion data points from the 200+ sensors located on each car. Transmitting, analysing and presenting the results of this acquisition allows engineers and strategists to make informed decisions in real-time.
This technology is now the foundation for MAT’s significant work in healthcare. Working with GSK, MAT is drawing on over 50 years’ experience of using telemetry and algorithms to monitor the “health” of its race cars, to develop biotelemetry technology that can measure 24/7 the vital signs and mobility of patients involved in drug trials – specifically stroke-recovery therapies and ALS treatments. The data, streamed in real-time from patients, allows researchers to determine more quickly if a drug is or isn’t working, or is causing troubling side effects. In the long-run this personalised approach to patient care could save time, money and – most importantly – lives.
The panel at SXSW has been organised in conjunction with UK Trade and Investment (UKTI), and will be moderated by Dan Rutstein, regional director of UK Trade & Investment for West and Central USA. UKTI is the government department that helps UK-based companies succeed globally and assists overseas companies in bringing investment to the UK. Every year, UKTI hosts a British delegation to SXSW in order to encourage business between the US and UK. Last year at SXSW, UKTI recorded £14.5 million in business deals.
For more information, see the SXSW event schedule here.
The panel will be hosted at 3:30pm on Friday 13th March at the JW Marriott in downtown Austin, Texas.
