How McLaren is working with the local community to improve young people’s life chances

Last week, McLaren continued their commitment to improving social mobility for young people in the local community with their third Work Inspiration event held at the famous McLaren Technology Centre.

11 students from Fullbrook and Jubilee High were selected to take part in a programme designed to develop key skills in areas essential to their continued personal and professional development.

The programme, aimed at year 11 and 12 students, offers an insight into employer expectations and skills that will be useful for the future. The programme provides students with experiences that allow them to develop and demonstrate key skills including teamwork, self-confidence and communications which can be incorporated into CVs and future applications.

The day was filled with unique learning experiences, from developing problem-solving skills by pitching their own marketing campaign to improving communication and teamwork through a Grand Prix pit stop challenge. Students also received practical experience, insight and advice from McLaren’s expert recruitment team.

Patrick Bermingham, Group HR Director at McLaren Technology Group, said:

“I’m proud to see McLaren’s Work Inspiration programme in its third year. The programme was created to engage with local school students, providing a unique experience at McLaren to help them improve their chances in a competitive job market.

"By providing hands-on learning that focuses on communication skills, teamwork and self-confidence in the workplace, skills we highly value at McLaren, students will be better able to demonstrate their strengths to potential employers, wherever their ambitions lie.”

Jack, a year 12 student attending the day said:

“Spending the day at a respected local employer like McLaren was a great opportunity for me. The skills and experience I gained on the day will help me continue to grow both in my academic and professional career for years to come.”

The nominations process for McLaren’s Work Inspiration programme will start in June 2018.
